Studio Practice

Studio Practice is a series of paintings based on a collage that explores contextual color theory, abstraction, and seriality.

Grid 002 (center) serves as the starting point for the series, created by a process of abstracting and translating visual information from a collage through drawing and finally paint. Grid 001 (Left) and Grid 003 (right) pull color information from the center piece, and expand the lightest and darkest hues in their compositions. Informed by Josef Albers’ writings in Interaction of Color, the color relationship between the three pieces creates an optical illusion. The lightest color in Grid 002 is the same color as darkest color in Grid 001, however, our eyes percieve the lightest tone to be a match. The darkest color in Grid 002 is the lightest color in Grid 003 yet our eyes percieve the mid-tone to be a visual match.
